Congratulations to our Junior Club Captain!
This year's Lincolnshire junior club championships were held at Boston Golf Club. Ellie Mae Horsted, our junior captain, won both the under-16 category as well as the overall gross competition, becoming the girls' county champion for the year.
Belton Park Junior season is underway
The first competition of the new Junior Season at Belton Park was played on Thursday 7th April. In extremely difficult conditions with high winds and driving rain, our Juniors played for the Ancaster Shield.
The scoring from two of the players was exceptional given the conditions with both being under handicap. The eventual winner on countback was Harry Chambers from Ellie Horsted in second place.
Blake Smith wins Junior Matchplay Knockout
The final competition of the 2021 Junior season was played over the Christmas holidays for the Paul Woods Matchplay Knockout Trophy. Paul was a past Captain of Belton Park but sadly passed away last year. In Paul’s memory, his family kindly donated a brand new trophy to the junior section which the club is extremely grateful for. After two very close semi-finals, Blake Smith and Toby Hayle contested the final which was a battle of the left-handers. With an excellent round of golf, Blake Smith became the inaugural winner of the Paul Woods Knockout Trophy with a 5&4 victory over Toby. Paul’s widow Liz can be seen pictured below presenting the beautiful Trophy to Blake.
Junior vice-captain continues his success
We had a number of wins this month, with our junior vice-captain Blake Smith winning two Little Imps tournaments at Belton Park and then Pottergate. Blake went on to finish second in the prestigious club competition, The Centenary Cup, which resulted in another handicap cut for this fast improving junior. Our congratulations are extended to Blake who continues to represent Belton Park so well on the County stage.
Free Junior Taster Day
Just to make you aware that Belton Park Golf Club will be holding a Taster Day on Tuesday 10th May aimed at attracting more Juniors to take up and enjoy our wonderful game. The attached poster is being circulated to schools in the area to promote the event but we didn't want to forget our members.
Many of you will have children, grandchildren or relatives who may want to take advantage of this Taster Day and enjoy the special programme of activities that Shay and Josh will be putting on. It is the first time that we have held such an event for many years but it is important that we promote the club as a welcoming environment for young children living in the Grantham area to come and play the game.
If you do have someone that you feel would enjoy the event then please contact the office and register their name. The first event will be limited to 20 players per session (40 in total) but subsequent days will be put on if the interest is high. Ellie Horsted elected as Junior Captain
The Junior AGM was held on Saturday 22nd January when the new Captain and Vice-Captain were elected. Ellie Horsted was elected as Junior Captain for 2022 and Ellie nominated Blake Smith as her Vice-Captain, both will be excellent representatives for the club this year. Three special trophies were also awarded for outstanding achievement and contribution during the 2021 season. Ellie Horsted won the golfer of the year Trophy, The Bill Whyte Trophy, for her contribution to the junior section and her great success on the course, both at club and county level. The second trophy was the Trevor Ireland Trophy which was awarded to the junior without a handicap who has been most active in the club. The worthy recipient was Amy Watson who has attended almost all coaching sessions and fun events as well as being a regular player in the Little Imps Tour which is run by Trevor. The final presentation was the Teddy Edwards Trophy for the most improved golfer of the year. The unanimous decision was to award this to Harry Chambers who did not even have a handicap at the start of the year but by the end of it, he was representing Belton Park Golf Club in our County Championship-winning squad. All the winners can be seen pictured below receiving their awards from Gents Club Captain, Andy Hodgson and Ladies Club Captain, Yvonne Bashford.
