Elsham County Foursomes
On the 14th of August Belton Park travelled to Elsham Golf Club for the finals of the county foursomes. This competition started back in 1965. 4 teams made the lineup from the original 27 clubs across Lincolnshire which included Belton Park, Spalding, Blankney and host club Elsham.
The morning semi-finals saw Belton drawn against defending champions Spading GC who fielded no less than two former County Champions, current Midland Champion and current European Seniors Champion and at the halfway stage Belton Park held a slight advantage in the hot sunny conditions.
In the closing stages, Belton Park were up against it needing to halve the last hole to send the match into a playoff to reach the grand finale. Jack Diment and team captain John Kirkup were up to the task and held their nerve in front of many supporters and spectators that attended. Belton’s Harry Glenn & Will Hopkins were nominated for the playoff and after Harry Glenn nearly drove the 346-yard 1st hole a birdie followed and saw Belton one match away from the winner’s circle which would be the first time since 2014. Semi-final scores: Harry Glenn & Will Hopkins lost 1 down, Gareth Williams & Simon Williams lost 2 down and John Kirkup & Jack Diment won 3 up.
In the final, Belton met host club Elsham who also fielded a strong side which consisted of county players. Again, at the halfway stage scores were tight. In the latter stages, Belton’s players cruised to victory with Will Hopkins & Harry Glenn winning 5up, Simon William & Gareth Williams all square and Jack Diment & John Kirkup undefeated morning and afternoon 2up.
During the presentation team captain, John Kirkup congratulated his fellow players for their true grit and determination which saw them overwhelm the wealth of talent put before them.
