C team in a great away win 4½ to 1½ at The Nottinghamshire

The C team played away in a midweek match at The Nottinghamshire in alternating warm and windy or very wet rainy conditions. The courses were freshly cut and were in very good condition with fast true greens.

The 6 pairs split into 2 groups with 3 pairs playing each course. Belton Park C team Captain Ian Carroll partnered by Past Gents Captain Colin Mason competed against The Nottinghamshire’s club Captain Graham Chambers (the club’s matchplay champion!) and Dick Poole. This game was close, but as Graham played to scratch up to the 13th hole, Ian and Colin were fighting to keep within reach of Graham’s game and ended up losing 3&2.

The remainder of the matches resulted in 4 wins for Belton Park and one halved match. During the speeches the Belton Park players did mention that their Captain had lost yet again, but his team selection once again proved excellent in achieving a great away win!

Best pair on the night went to Andy MacGowan and Dish Patel with a 3&2 win so both players are competing for best player of the year and are closing in on John Cooke, the early favourite.

Gents Captain Simon Denton partnered by Martin Clarke have made a different start this year as they won! Something has changed from last year but what? Will the nickname – “Sideways Simon” be a thing of the past?

Gents Spring Open, May 27th

The recent Bank Holiday weekend was a busy time at Belton Park Golf Club with competitions on the Sunday and the Monday.

On a breezy and blustery Sunday we hosted the Gents’ Spring Open with competitions in the morning and the afternoon.  The morning competition was for the Rothwell Lee Cup, which was a foursome stableford event with some 54 teams of two competing.  The winners, T Hickmore and J Goddard with 38 points came from Stanton-on-the-Wolds with second place, C Budd and A Vernon on 35 points representing Edwalton and Willesley Park respectively.

Third place went to R Tapp from Belton Park and S Downie from Burghley who also scored 35 points but lost 2nd place on countback.  The same teams competed for the Hemswell Cup in the afternoon which was a Betterball stableford event.   C Budd and A Vernon had a very good day with a win in this event on 43 points with second and third prizes going to Belton Park golfers, S Boylan/G Watkin and S Mitchell/S Moore; 42 and 41 points respectively.

The weather turned for the Monday competition with the forecast of heavy showers predicted.  The forecasters were not wrong with showers catching most of the field of 28 teams!  Each team consisted of 4 Belton Park golfers in an AM AM stableford format where the best 2 scores are to count towards the end result.

First place went to the team of D Coyle/B White/G Begy/A Lewis who carded 90 points.  They were closely followed by the team of G Clark/O Dyson/N Bristow/J Whaler on 89 points and finally in 3rd place on 88 points was the team of C Horn/D Scott/P Thacker/T Dean.
