Aveling Barford Hospital Cup

On Sunday, August 22nd, 25 teams of four players played in the Aveling Barford Hospital Cup open competition at Belton Park Golf Club. The format was Gents four ball better ball, two Stableford scores to count on each hole, and the teams played the Brownlow course [1 to 18]. This is a very popular competition and teams came from all over Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, and Cambridgeshire to compete, with some from as far afield as Salisbury!

The Aveling Barford is one of the oldest trophies played for at Belton Park. It was organized by local engineering company Aveling Barford in 1937. The magnificent trophy was originally called the Aveling Barford Hospital Challenge Trophy and was given to Grantham Hospital, in order that a golf charity could be organized each year to raise funds for the hospital. The competition has been organized by Belton Park Golf Club since the 1980s and the format is now an 18-hole AM AM.

The conditions on the day were ideal for some excellent golf despite the forecast of thunderstorms and rain, which never materialized! All the competitors praised the superb condition of the course.

The winning team of Darren Nicholson, Paul Burrell, Ian Mason, and Andy Stones from the local club, Sudbrook Moor, scored a magnificent 91 points, including a hole-in-one by Ian Mason on hole 6!  For the full results, see the Belton Park website.

Belton Park Golf Club will be donating £100 to the NHS from the proceeds of the competition.

Midland Golf Team Call up

Belton Park 1st team player, Jack Diment has been asked to represent the Midland Golf team in their annual fixture against the Southwest

Given the number of clubs in the Midland region, this is a tremendous accolade for Jack, and we wish him every success.

Jack is the first player from Belton Park to be selected for the Midlands team for several decades. He continues to be a great ambassador for Belton Park Golf Club, and this is just a reward for all the dedication he gives to his game.

Belton Park Juniors win South Lincs League

On Wednesday the18th August, teams from Belton Park, Belton Woods, Spalding, and Stoke Rochford contested the South Lincs Junior League final at South Kyme Golf Club. The standard of golf on display was excellent and all juniors did their respective clubs proud.

Marcus Wildblood and Captain Emily Horsted were outstanding in the two lead-off groups, both winning all their matches to give Belton Park six wins on the board. James Hayle won one of his three matches but narrowly lost both the others on the last hole. The last group was equally as tight, and Ellie Horsted held her nerve to secure the one victory required to give Belton Park the title.

After four years without a junior team in the league, this was a great achievement, and we now go on to represent the South League in the County final at Waltham Windmill on the 26th of September.

We would like to make a special thanks to all the Belton Park Golf Club members who came along to support the Junior.

Seniors’ vs Spalding – 17th August

The Belton Park Seniors were back on home turf on Tuesday, August 17th for their friendly match versus Spalding Seniors.

On a cold wet morning, the outlook was not great but, by the time the first game tee’d off, the rain had stopped and thankfully didn’t return. However, the cool, windy conditions were very challenging for both teams.

The Belton team won the first two games and Spalding won the next three, so with three games to go, things weren’t looking too good for the home team! However, the last three games were all wins for Belton, so the final match result was a 5-3 win for Belton Park. The Seniors remain unbeaten at home!

After the post-match lunch, Spalding Captain Neil Wilkinson said how impressed he and his team were with the presentation and excellent condition of the course, especially the greens which were very smooth and true. Neil also thanked the catering staff for an excellent lunch.

Lady Past Captain's Trophy

On a very sunny day at the beginning of August, eighteen of the Lady Past Captains of Belton Park Golf Club played a Stableford competition for the prestigious Trophy presented by former Captain, Mona Burgess, in 1987.

After play, a further four Lady Past Captains joined the group for an excellent buffet meal before the presentation was made to the winner.  This was a great opportunity for everyone to spend time together and reminisce after such a long period of living with Covid restrictions.

Former Captains were recognised as ‘trail blazers’ for the Ladies Section back in the 1990s when equal playing rights were secured, and Ladies also had the opportunity to become voting members on the Club Management Committee.

The result of the main, 18-hole, competition:

1st    Place, and the overall winner, was last year’s Lady Captain, Pam Wiggins, with 37 points.

2nd   Place went to Joy Stepney, Lady Captain in 2015, with 36 points.

3rd    Place was Shelley McClelland, Lady Captain in 2007, with 34 points.

The result of a 9-hole competition, played in conjunction with the main event, was a joint win for Joan Craft and Alice Epton, Lady Captains in 1985 and 2012respectively.
