Peter Alliss returns to Belton Park

The “voice of Golf”, Mr Peter Alliss, visited Belton Park Golf Club on Saturday 17th August to help celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the opening of the Inner nine holes. Mr Alliss designed the layout for the nine holes with course architect Dave Thomas in 1979 and it was wonderful to welcome him back to the club.

The day started with an Am Am competition on the nine holes designed by Peter and nearly 100 members took part on a lovely Summer day. The event was won by Pete Corcoran, Paul Wood, Paul Thompson, and Anna Clark, narrowly beating Stuart Smith, David Couth, Paul Nash, and Chris Wesson on countback.

A display board was put up in the clubhouse with memorabilia from the original opening of the nine holes in 1979. Among the guests that day in 1979 were; Ray Clemence the England goalkeeper, John Spencer the world snooker champion, Christy O’ Connor Jnr and several players from the Nottingham Forest European Cup Winning team.

In the evening on Saturday, nearly 150 members and their guests enjoyed a superb four course meal before Peter Alliss gave an after-dinner speech and answered questions on his career in golf. It was a fabulous evening for the club and will be long remembered. Pictured with Peter Alliss are Captain Simon Denton and Lady Captain Helen Long presenting a cheque for one of Peter’s charities, England and Wales Blind Golf (picture courtesy of The Grantham Journal).

Belton Park win the Bramley Singles Trophy

On Sunday 18th August, the Belton Park First team travelled to Seacroft to take on Woodhall Spa and Cleethorpes in the final of the Bramley Singles Trophy competition. Representing Belton Park were Jack Diment, Chris Haynes, and Matt Haynes in this prestigious event. It was a lovely day but a strong wind made it very difficult for the players.

The morning matches were very tight and at the halfway stage the result was difficult to predict. In the afternoon the Belton players really turned on the style with some superb golf which Woodhall and Cleethorpes simply could not match. Matt Haynes led the way with two emphatic victories beating Les Toyne from Woodhall Spa 6&5 and Jay Kirkum from Cleethorpes 9&7. Chris Haynes also had an emphatic win against Leon Leaney from Woodhall Spa by 6&5 and having been two down against John Jarrel from Cleethorpes he turned the game around to win by one hole. This meant that Jack Diment needed to win one game to secure the title. In a superb match the lead constantly changed hands until Jack finally secured a 3&2 victory over Paul Wharton from Woodhall Spa.

For the first time in the competition every competitor was either a County player or senior County player so for Belton to retain the Trophy was an outstanding achievement. Final score was Belton Park 5, Cleethorpes 3 and Woodhall Spa 1.

Chris, Matt, and Jack now go on to represent Belton Park in the Champion Club of England tournament at Romford Golf Club in September. It is the first time we have ever reached the final and although it won’t be easy, if the boys play as well as they did at Seacroft then we have a great chance of being Champion Club of England.

In addition, Jack is representing Belton Park Golf Club and Lincolnshire in the National Amateur championship at Frilford Heath. A great time for our first team players, and we wish them well in both finals.

Seniors Victorious over Spalding 6½ - 1½

On Tuesday, August 20th the Seniors hosted the return friendly match against Spalding Seniors. The match was played in great spirits with plenty of friendly banter. Judging by the laughter during the post-match lunch, everyone enjoyed the day.

The weather was kind, with a light breeze and some sunshine, and the course was in excellent condition with well-defined fairways and smooth fast greens.

After the lunch, Spalding Captain Peter Julien thanked the catering staff and the greens staff for the excellent meal and the presentation of the course. The final result was a good win for Belton Park by 6½ - 1½ , which was revenge for the defeat by the same margin at the away match back in July!

Ladies Win Regional Final to play at St. Andrews in National Foursomes Final

Jackie Wilson and Helen Long are celebrating their win at the regional final of the R&A Coronation Foursomes at Market Rasen. The pair will now go forward to the National Final at St Andrews in September.

Jackie and Helen won the Coronation Foursomes at Belton Park in May meaning they qualified for the area final, choosing Market Rasen Golf Club on 9th August for their next round. On a day with terrible rain and a start delayed by 30 minutes due to the weather, they set out to play 18 holes with two ladies from Millfield Golf Club.

After 58 pairs had completed their round Jackie and Helen led the field with 37 stableford points and winning on countback from two ladies from Forest Pines.

They will now play against 15 other pairs from all over the UK on September 9th at St. Andrews.

C Team Beat The Nottinghamshire 4½ - 1½

On Thursday, August 15th the Belton Park C Team welcomed a team from The Nottinghamshire for a home match which was played on a superbly laid out course with clearly defined fairways and fast true greens.

The C team welcomed back Dave Wing who has not played due to injuries for 9 months. Dave played with C team Captain Ian Carroll in the 1st game, the result is one to try and forget! Dave and Ian played against Notts Club Captain Graeme Chambers (matchplay champion!) and Joe Timmins who holed every putt, whereas the Belton pair did not! Enough said!

The rest of the team were carefully selected from the usual honed athletes which proved to be the master plan! Belton’s 2nd pair of Andy MacGowan and Ian Whyte halved their match on the last hole, well played and well deserved!

The next two games were well won, Simon Denton & Kevin Phillips and John Cooke & Garry Taylor had fantastic results, both winning 6&5. These 4 players will be going on to the best players of the year board. Our 5th and 6th pairs of James Wiggins & Keith Smith and Robb Tapp & Clive Horn both had very close matches, but came out with that crucial 1 up wins, well played!
