Lincolnshire Ladies Past Captains - Thursday 25th July

On the warmest day of the year so far, 96 ladies representing hundreds of years of Lincolnshire Past Captains from clubs all over Lincolnshire, attended the annual event to play for the individual trophy and team shield.

Despite cakes and drinks at the half way house, and additional water provided around the course, some of the ladies found the temperatures in excess of 35 degrees too much and had to retire. The scores favoured the ladies who played early and had local knowledge.

Winner of the overall individual trophy was Yvonne Bashford from Belton Park with a score of 38 points. Prize winners in the Silver category were; 1st Shelley McClelland with 35 points, 2nd Sheila Mason with 34 points, 3rd Jackie Wilson with 32 points, 4th Julie Hamer with 31 points and 5th Sheilah Mitchell with 30 points. Prize winners in the Bronze category were 1st Gillian Holder 33 points, 2nd Penny Buckley with 29 points, 3rd Sue Hall with 28 points and 4th Patricia Haynes with 26 points. Winner in the over 80 category was Maureen Lincoln with 27 points.

Winners in the over 70n category were 1st Sue Walker-Sherriff with 33 points, 2nd Ann Hodgson with 29 points and 3rd Pam Shepherd with 28 points.

Winners of the County Shield for best team were Joy Stepney, Julie Hamer, Shelley McClelland and Sheila Mason from Belton Park with a score of 100 points. 2nd were Trudie Galloway, Lorraine Robertson, Yvonne Bashford and Jane O’Reilly with 87 points. 3rd were Sue Walker-Sherriff, Marjie Thompson, Enid Maltby and Sue Hall with 86 points and 4th were Gillian holder, Helen Bradshaw, Sue Brown and Janet Gordon with 84 points.

Winners of the two’s competition who shared £72 were Sheila Dugmore and Sheilah Mitchell.

Ladies Invitation Day - Tuesday 23rd July

In a busy week for the Ladies at Belton Park, there were 2 major events; Ladies Invitation Day and the Lincolnshire Ladies Past Captains competition.

On Tuesday 23rd July ladies from 22 other golf clubs around the UK joined Belton Park ladies at their annual invitation day. The weather was great and not too hot, unlike later in the week.

An 18-hole stableford competition took place with additional prizes for nearest the pins and best front nine and best back nine. The winning lady from Belton Park wins The Enid Burnett trophy, presented by David Burnett in honour of his wife.

The winners with 41 points were Jackie Scott from Belton Park and her partner, Jackie Richards, from Stanton- on- the-Wolds golf club. Second, with 41 points (On countback) was Issie Guest from Belton Park and her guest Wendy Stewart from Belton Woods. Third, also with 41 points, were Joy Stepney from Belton Park and her guest Gill Lamming from Sleaford. Best front nine was won by Sandra Pask and A Brightman and Best Back nine was won by Pam Wiggins and Lesley Williams. Winners of the Lucky Dip card were Veronica Rose and her guest Lorrie McGowen from Radcliffe-on-Trent.

Dick Short wins Past Captains Trophy

On Wednesday 17th July, twenty-one past captains competed for the prestigious Past Captains Trophy. In glorious weather the scores were very good and it was very tight at the top with Dick Short eventually emerging the winner with 39 points.

Dick had an excellent round which included four birdies and six pars that pushed last year’s Captain Colin Mason into second place. Colin finished with 38 points one ahead of John McClelland in third.

The competition was followed by an evening meal hosted by this year’s Captain Simon Denton and was finished off perfectly with the traditional passing of the port. Congratulations to Dick on regaining the Trophy he last won in 2006!

Seniors win inaugural home match vs Rufford Park

On Tuesday, July 23rd the Seniors played their inaugural home match versus Rufford Park golf club and pulled off a 5-3 home win. The Rufford Park team were two players short, so the 2 reserves (Ian Askew and Gary Hill) from the Belton Park team stepped in to make up the numbers on a “free transfer” and won their match!

The weather was steaming hot and the course was in lovely condition. After a very seasonal cold buffet lunch, Rufford Park Seniors Captain Jim Sterland thanked the catering team and the Greenkeepers for an excellent day.

Dave Dobney won a bottle of whisky in the “heads and tails” game.

C team earn home draw 3-3 with Melton Mowbray - July 18th

Belton Park C team entertained golfing friends from Melton Mowbray on a gorgeous warm sunny Thursday afternoon. The course was in immaculate condition with fabulous fairways and greens, and a pleasure to be competing on.

Captain Ian Carroll, partnered again by Ian Whyte, played well but never capitalised on the putting and went down to Melton’s Captain Adrian Green and Ady Stokes.

The 2nd pair of James Wiggins and Garry Taylor made up the deficit with a win, then bad news came from our 3rd pair John Clark and Alec Sherwin who battled hard but lost. This scenario continued on to the last game, making the match halved, 3-3.

This week the 3 winning pairs went on to the best players of the year table and special thanks go to our last pair, Ken and Andy, as they both came in as late subs and won their game to halve the match.

A big thanks to our green keepers for presenting us with a great course and to our kitchen staff for feeding us so well and we bid a sad farewell to Dan who has catered for us for 5 years on the tables - good luck on your new travels in Scotland.

Mixed team win away match at Newark - July 19th

On Friday 19th July the Belton Park mixed team played Newark Golf Club at Newark and pulled off an excellent 6½ to 1½ away win.

The weather forecast was not very good with rain forecast for most of the afternoon and thunderstorms predicted. On the day the team were very fortunate with the weather, it did rain, but not all of the time.

After a most enjoyable meal the Club Captain of Newark made a most amusing speech welcoming all the Captains and Vice Captains from Belton Park – we are not sure who he actually played with but it didn’t seem to be the Lady Captain from Belton Park! – even so they had a most enjoyable round.

Simon Denton, Belton Park Gents Captain, responded in an equally amusing way, thanking Newark for their hospitality and praising the course and the catering staff.  He eventually remembered to announce the result which was six and a half against one and a half in favour of Belton Park.

A really most enjoyable afternoon and evening.
