Belton Park 1st Team Triumph over Blankney

On Saturday, May 18th Belton Park Golf Club 1st team, captained by Sean McAuley, welcomed Blankey Golf Club to compete in the 3rd league match of the season. The weather on the day was calm, with a light northerly breeze. However, the conditions got a little tougher when the rain came in the late afternoon.

The first game went down the 18th ending in a well-fought half. There were notable victories from Joe Clayton and Olly Mitchell who won their match 6&5, shooting an impressive 4 under par after only 5 holes set the scene for the young duo in their second match together. They are becoming somewhat of a formidable force.

Sean McAuley and Kevin Sheppard who were 3 down after 6 holes went on to win on the 13th green thanks to a fantastic birdie from Kevin closing out the match 6&5.

Belton Park didn't lose a single match on the day. Harry Glenn and Sam Sutton’s game went down the 18th, but an impressive clutch putt from Harry lead to a well-earned half point. With the score at 4 – 1, Belton Park were waiting for Steve Mitchell, a 1st team veteran and rookie Simon Moore who was experiencing his first scratch team match. The pair were obviously well suited, shooting 6 under gross and winning their match 2&1.

Seniors – Alec Hay Trophy - May 14th

On Tuesday May 14th, 21 pairs of Seniors played in the Alec Hay Trophy. The weather was cool and breezy, but the Belmont course (holes 10-27) was in excellent condition.

The competition is a greensomes stableford format where both players drive, the best drive is chosen, and then the pair play alternate shots. The winning pair of Gary Hill and Paul Walsh finished with 36 points in what were fairly challenging conditions.

C Team victorious over local rivals Belton Woods

On Thursday, May 16th Belton Park C team hosted a match against local rivals Belton Woods, which started in hot windy conditions and ended in a cold still evening. Our preparations were made to compete against our nearest rivals, and home advantage proved key with a convincing win 4½ to 1½.

De ja vu – C team Captain Ian Carroll, partnered by Martin Clarke, failed to take the home advantage due to too much golf from interesting rough positions letting the opposition of Alan and Harry take the early initiative winning 3&2.

Again, Belton Park’s team proved their worth by winning the next 4 matches and halving the last. Super sub Ken Kane came in with just two hours’ notice and gained the half – a big thanks to Ken.

Best pair went to Ajay Panchal and John Cooke with a terrific 7&6 win making John the early leader in our best player of the year 2019 - great Job John keep it up.

Serious heavy side winds made the nearest the pin 4th hole so difficult that only Ben Bayliss (best player 2018) hit the green winning a bottle of wine donated by Andy MacGowan. Andy’s wine cellar maybe getting smaller but so is his waistline, so everybody’s a winner!

The match was played in glorious weather over a very well-conditioned Rufford course. After the match both teams enjoyed an excellent lunch. The respective Captains looked forward to the return fixture at Belton Park and to continuing the fixture in years to come.

C Team Match vs Burghley Park - May 9th

On Thursday May 9th Belton Park C Team hosted a team from Burghley Park.

Captain Ian Carroll assisted by the “not so toned and tanned” Andy MacGowan competed against well in form stand in Captain Matt Payton and Stewart Ward, but alas were defeated 3&2.

The conditions were cold and wet with some dry spells and the course was in superb condition with fabulous greens. Matt and Stewart demonstrated how to sink putts from over 20 feet!

The Ancaster course was chosen for the match and the remainder of the Belton Park team showed good spirit and won all five of the remaining games. The best win of the night was from John Cooke and Clive Horne with a 6&5 win giving John the early lead in the best C Team player of the year. The best C Team player of the year trophy will be presented in the AM AM in October. John topped this achievement by winning a bottle of wine for nearest the pin on the 6th hole!
