Seniors vs Stanton-on-the-Wolds – May 28th

On Tuesday, May 28th the Seniors at Belton Park played host to the Seniors team from Stanton-on-the-Wolds Golf Club. On a beautiful sunny day, the match was played in excellent spirits on the Belmont course (holes 10-27) which was very lush after the recent rain.

The Seniors team was captained on the day by Vice Captain Pete Long as the Seniors Captain was on holiday. Unfortunately, the Captain for the day didn’t lead by example, losing 2 down and Belton lost the first 2 games. However, Belton rallied and the final result was another 5½ to 2½ win for the Belton Park Team.

Stanton-on-the-Wolds Captain Richard Mercer thanked the catering staff for an excellent meal, and the greens staff for preparing the course in such lovely condition. John Thompson won a bottle of whisky in the “heads and tails” game after the meal.

Charity AM AM raises £8,000 - May 10th

On Friday 10th May Belton Park Golf Club held its annual Charity Day to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, St Barnabus Trust, Parkinson’s UK, and English Welsh Blind Golf Society. The event was sponsored by Avalon Cabins, Turnbull Builders Merchants and Price Whiting Hodgson Financial Planning as well as several individual hole sponsors. It was another very successful day and most teams managed to get in before the torrential downpour late afternoon. The course was in magnificent condition and the scoring reflected this with the winners being the very first team out, The Four Amigos made up of Steve Glenn, Harry Glenn, Andy Pickering and Steve Hodgson narrowly beating The Waste Specialists led by David Brighton with Paul Whitaker, Simon Moore and Carl Gelder on countback with 89 points. There was also a separate 9-hole Texas Scramble competition won by Stan the Sweeps team with a magnificent score of 23.3 completing a good day for Stan as they were also third in the main competition with 88 points.

The longest drive for the men was won by Kev Sheppard with Anna Clark taking the women’s prize. Nearest the pin on the 14th was D Hind and the nearest the pin in two prize was won by Simon Moore. There was also a beat the pro hole on the 17th which was manned by Kelly Tidy from GolfBreaks.com and our very own Levi Desmond. With Kelly being an ex Curtis Cup player and Levi on the Euro Pro tour there were not too many winners but congratulations to Tim Stubbs who won the draw for £200. Many thanks to Kelly and Levi for their efforts on the day.

However, the highlight of the day’s golf was a hole-in-one on the 6th hole by Dave Brownlow. Needless to say, this shot won the nearest the pin prize and many members enjoyed a glass of whisky with Dave afterwards.

There was a running buffet during the day which was enjoyed by all and the day finished with a Charity auction hosted by Ed Hine who did a superb job standing in for his brother Charles. Our Captain Simon Denton thanked everyone for contributing so much to the day and especially the organising team of Mick Sims, Richard Brighton and Charles Hine who put so much time and effort into making the day work. Simon also thanked the green staff for producing such a magnificent course and the catering team who worked tirelessly throughout the day.

The day raised nearly £8000 for our charities which was an excellent result. Please note for your diaries that next year’s event will be on Friday 8th May.

They are becoming somewhat of a formidable force.

Sean McAuley and Kevin Sheppard who were 3 down after 6 holes went on to win on the 13th green thanks to a fantastic birdie from Kevin closing out the match 6&5.

Belton Park didn't lose a single match on the day. Harry Glenn and Sam Sutton’s game went down the 18th, but an impressive clutch putt from Harry lead to a well-earned half point. With the score at 4 – 1, Belton Park were waiting for Steve Mitchell, a 1st team veteran and rookie Simon Moore who was experiencing his first scratch team match. The pair were obviously well suited, shooting 6 under gross and winning their match 2&1.
