Pete Thackers Golf Marathon

On Friday the 1st of October Belton Park Member Peter Thacker played golf all day to raise funds for the Matt Hampson Foundation's Rehabilitation Centre, originally closely linked to Leicester Tigers RFC but now catering for a much wider range of sports and disabilities. A most worthy cause, as I'm sure you will agree.

Despite playing in some unpleasant weather Pete battled on for the full 12 hrs and completed no less than 90 holes - raising the impressive sum of just over £4000. Quite a feat!

Pete wishes to thank all those members who sponsored his efforts and, of course to those who either played alongside him or acted as caddies, with a special mention to Club Captain, Andy Macgowan, Sue Walker- Sheriff, and Helen Long who battled on with him in the worst of the conditions.

Pete sends his apologies for the Evening dinner cancelation due to insufficient support. However, he hopes to be more successful in this respect next year.  Maybe linking his marathon to a golf competition & dinner if the club agrees. So please watch this space.

Seniors Friendly Match at Stanton-on-the-Wolds – Monday, October 11th

On a bright sunny autumn morning the Belton Park Seniors travelled to Stanton-on-the-Wolds golf club for the rearranged final away friendly match of the season.

The match was eagerly awaited, as it is one of the most popular away venues and the Belton Seniors were keen to finish the season with an away win to follow the 5½ - 2½ home win earlier in the year. It was not expected to be an easy task with Stanton keen for revenge!

Both team Captains were unavailable for this final match, and the Vice-Captains of each team took charge of the proceedings for the day. The course was excellent, with the greens in magnificent condition, without doubt the truest, fastest greens we’ve played on all season.

The match was keenly fought as expected, with five of the games going to the 18th green to decide the result. However, the overall result went Belton Park’s way with another 5½ - 2½ win.

Following the match, both teams enjoyed an excellent chicken lunch. Belton Vice-Captain Tim Stubbs thanked Stanton for their superb hospitality and complimented them on their stunning greens & the excellent post-match meal.

Gillam Trophy

On 3rd October the Gillam Trophy was contested over the Brownlow course by 62 pairs who had traveled far and wide to reach Belton Park on a clear, but windswept day.

Early scores suggested that scoring was challenging and that team Cairns who had booked their place in this competition in 2019 might prevail with 43 points! However, by the end of the day, the team of Mike Abrahamsen and Elaine Ducker from Cottingham Parks prevailed with a score of 44 points. The trophy was duly presented to them after dinner as they are unable to attend the gala presentation evening.

Seniors Match versus Stoke Rochford – October 5th

This was the final home match of the season for the Belton Seniors and the team were keen to preserve their unbeaten home record. In the away fixture earlier in September, the Belton team were victorious 5-3, so the Stoke team were looking for revenge!

Both teams fielded their Captain and Vice-Captain in the first match and there were some very close games. In the end the result was a resounding victory for Belton Park, 7-1.

Seniors and Ladies AM AM – September 30th

This is an annual event where the Seniors and Ladies play together in a mixed AM AM format, one Senior and one Lady to score on each hole. This year it was combined with the Seniors Captain’s AM AM where the Seniors invite club “dignitaries” to play and then join them for a lunch. The club’s President, Vice-President, Chairman, Gents Captain, Lady Captain, and Treasurer all played in the event.

The weather was pretty awful, with showers on and off all day, plus a strong cool wind. The tough conditions had a big effect on the team scores! The winning team of Sue Addis, Grace Andrew, Frank Overton, and John McNally came in with a score of 80 points. In second place, also on 80 points (on countback) was the team of Chris Rudkin, Lisa White, Gary Hill, and Derek Bashford.

The teams enjoyed an excellent lunch after the competition. Pictured are the winners and runners-up.
