C Team vs Spalding – First loss of the season!

On Monday, July 8th a tried and tested selection of players travelled to Spalding brimming with confidence, and 5 hours later returned licking their wounds!

The match was played on a warm and dry afternoon on a course where the greens were running very fast, making it quite difficult to stop a ball. The course is beautifully tree lined with very little rough.

Captain Ian Carroll, supported by Andy MacGowan faced the might of Spalding's Captain Peter William and Chris Warnes, who hits golf balls very long and very straight, reducing par 5’s to par 4’s! The immediate pressure was on, Ian and Andy were losing 4 down at the turn, then the game started to change and the game was level by the 15th hole, then in another twist, Captain Peter clinched the 17th and managed to halve the 18th, alas another defeat for Ian and Andy!

Our 2nd pair of Gents Captain Simon Denton and Robb Tapp played well, but lost 1 down. Now the pressure was on, and the 3rd pair of Colin Mason and our new team member, Dean Eldred came in with a 2 up win to go on to the best players of the year award table.

The 4th pair of John Cooke and Ben Bayliss halved their match and club Chairman James Wiggins and Kevin Phillips played well and were 2 up with 3 to play, but ran into a wall when Spalding won the last 3 holes leaving the Belton Park team with yet another 1 down defeat!

Spalding presented us with a lovely meal and the room was filled with laughter as the teams talked about the way each of the games went.

The final result was a 4½ to 1½ win for Spalding.
