Battle Back 2021

September 17th proved to be a glorious warm sunny day and just the perfect day for golfers to meet up and play together.

This year we had 10 BattleBack golfers (Captained by Steve Barnes) who came to our club to play. There were 2 new faces in their squad and 1 had traveled as far as Hastings to play with us.

The golf being played was of a high standard and some high scores were recorded and the winning team was on a countback of 92.

My thanks go to everyone involved in making the day possible which includes- Jeanette Strutt, Tom, and Pat Green, Martin and Veronica Clarke and Ian and Fiona Stockdale, and all the sponsors and players on the day. I must also thank everyone who placed bids for the auction items and hopefully carried away a bargain.

The highlights of the day were Playing on a great golf course, a fantastic halfway hut with so many choices of cakes and other goodies (yes larger belts needed) , sitting like we used to in our dining room, and enjoying a lovely Sunday roast with all the trimmings and topped by those old favorite’s sticky toffee pudding and custard or the cheesecake and coffee and mints- lovely.

After the dinner-

Steve Barne’s updated us with what and how ‘BattleBack’ came about and where it is in today’s world and what it achieves regarding sport in the rehabilitation of these ex-services who sustained serious bodily injuries.

Scott Blaney ex Grenadier Guard explained how he was seriously hurt in Afghanistan whilst on patrol and came under fire and took cover in a ditch previously booby-trapped by the Taliban by a daisy chain of mines which stopped his Army career and what his thoughts are today. Great guy!

Steve Bingley- ex-Army (6ft 4inches tall) asked me without any warnings if he could make his first-ever speech and said it has taken him 3 years plus to get to this stage as he has been suffering from PTSD and has a PTSD dog with him at all times. As this meant a lot to him I said yes-

Well, he had written a poem about his tours of duty within his Army career and asked us if he could read it to us- The detail was very graphic and he showed us the terrifying day to day duties he had to complete every day in his life, detailing each account within his poem and the room of people was left speechless and a standing ovation followed. Steve Bingley had some of his audience crying and I personally think we got as much therapy out of his speech as he did himself showing us that we do not have problems on any scale as he was used to handling every day in his Army service- Steve you are a top man.

Then came Jim Graham (tops and tails) who had to bring the room back into a cheery mood and did it wonderfully -guess who won this-Andy Macgowan yes fixed or what?

The raffle came next and this was expertly conducted by our very own Sue  Walker Sherriff and I can still hear her saying -  Marks and Spencer’s!!!!

The auction was conducted by Scott Blaney and I don’t know how the Grenadiers train these guys but by heck, they can remove loose change from pockets- great job Scott. Oh, and I must mention that Andy Macgowan will go into training for next year’s event as he owes everyone in the room 20 press-ups for not turning his phone off…….we will not forget Andy!!!!

Lastly, the 2no bottle floor slide’s this year was expertly conducted again by Scott Blaney and I understand he removed a lot of £1 coins from everyone’s pockets - another Grenadier well-trained tactical position.

The day was a complete success all because of the people who helped and played with the sponsor's backing and when all the monies are paid into the account I will let everyone know what was raised towards the BattleBack day.

When we finalize the finances, I would ask Andy Macgowan to assist me in a cheque presentation to BattleBack.
